Sjögren's Syndrome

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Camp Hill, PA

Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the glands that produce moisture, leading to dry eyes and a dry mouth. It can also cause fatigue and joint pain, and may affect other parts of the body.

Overview

Sjögren's syndrome can occur on its own or alongside other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. The hallmark symptoms are dryness of the eyes and mouth, but the disease can also involve the joints, skin, nerves, and internal organs.

With appropriate care, symptoms can be managed effectively and complications monitored, helping patients stay comfortable and protect their long-term health.

Common Symptoms

  • Dry, gritty, or burning eyes
  • Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Fatigue and joint pain
  • Dry skin and, in some patients, dryness of other areas
  • Swelling of the glands around the face and neck

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves evaluating your symptoms along with blood tests for specific autoantibodies (such as anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La), tests that measure eye and mouth dryness, and sometimes a small gland biopsy.

Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates

Treatment focuses on relieving dryness with artificial tears, saliva substitutes, and prescription medications that stimulate moisture, as well as managing joint symptoms and monitoring for complications. Care is individualized to your symptoms.
