Polymyalgia Rheumatica

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Camp Hill, PA

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition that causes pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders, neck, and hips. It mainly affects adults over 50 and typically responds well to treatment.

Overview

The hallmark of polymyalgia rheumatica is aching and stiffness in the shoulders and hips that is usually worse in the morning and can make everyday activities difficult. Symptoms often come on relatively quickly.

PMR is sometimes associated with a related condition called giant cell arteritis, which requires prompt attention. We evaluate for this and other causes to ensure you receive the right treatment.

Common Symptoms

  • Aching and stiffness in the shoulders, neck, and hips
  • Morning stiffness lasting longer than 30 to 45 minutes
  • Difficulty raising the arms or getting up from a chair
  • Fatigue, low-grade fever, and a general unwell feeling
  • Symptoms that often develop quickly over days to weeks

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on your symptoms, physical examination, and blood tests showing inflammation (such as ESR and CRP). We also check for signs of giant cell arteritis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates

Polymyalgia rheumatica usually responds quickly to low-dose corticosteroids, which are gradually tapered over time under close supervision. We monitor your response and watch for any related complications.
