Inflammatory Myositis

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Camp Hill, PA

Inflammatory myositis refers to a group of autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation and weakness of the muscles. Accurate diagnosis and treatment can help restore strength and prevent complications.

Overview

The inflammatory myopathies — which include polymyositis and dermatomyositis — cause progressive muscle weakness, often in the muscles closest to the trunk such as the hips, thighs, shoulders, and neck. Some forms also affect the skin, lungs, or other organs.

Because these conditions can affect more than the muscles, a careful and comprehensive evaluation is important. With treatment, many patients regain strength and function.

Common Symptoms

  • Muscle weakness, especially in the hips, thighs, shoulders, and neck
  • Difficulty climbing stairs, rising from a chair, or lifting the arms
  • Fatigue and muscle aching
  • Skin rashes in dermatomyositis
  • Difficulty swallowing or shortness of breath in some patients

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves a physical examination, blood tests for muscle enzymes and specific autoantibodies, and may include electromyography (EMG), MRI, or a muscle biopsy to confirm the type of myositis.

Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates

Treatment typically includes corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive medications to reduce inflammation, along with physical therapy to rebuild strength. We monitor the disease and screen for associated conditions as part of comprehensive care.
