Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. With early diagnosis and modern treatment, most people with RA can control their disease and protect their joints from permanent damage.
Overview
Rheumatoid arthritis typically affects the small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet, and usually in a symmetric pattern — the same joints on both sides of the body. Because it is a systemic disease, RA can also cause fatigue and, in some cases, affect other organs such as the eyes, lungs, and heart.
RA is different from osteoarthritis, the common “wear-and-tear” form of arthritis. RA is driven by inflammation, which means early and sustained treatment can change the course of the disease and prevent irreversible joint damage.
Common Symptoms
- Joint pain, swelling, and warmth, often in the hands, wrists, and feet
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes to an hour
- Symmetric joint involvement (both sides of the body)
- Fatigue, low-grade fever, and a general feeling of being unwell
- Firm lumps under the skin (rheumatoid nodules) in some patients
Diagnosis
Diagnosis combines a careful history and physical exam with blood tests (such as rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP antibodies, ESR, and CRP) and imaging like X-rays or ultrasound. Because early treatment matters so much, we work to establish a diagnosis promptly and begin an appropriate plan.
Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates
Treatment is tailored to each patient and may include disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as methotrexate, biologic or targeted synthetic therapies, and short-term anti-inflammatory medications. We monitor disease activity closely and adjust therapy over time with the goal of achieving low disease activity or remission.
