Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus)

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Camp Hill, PA

Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, blood cells, and other organs. With careful monitoring and treatment, most people with lupus lead full, active lives.

Overview

Lupus can look different in every patient and often follows a pattern of flares (periods of increased disease activity) and remission. Common features include fatigue, joint pain, and skin rashes, but lupus can also affect internal organs such as the kidneys.

Because lupus is so variable, ongoing follow-up and individualized care are essential to catch problems early and adjust treatment as needed.

Common Symptoms

  • Fatigue and joint pain or swelling
  • A butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose, or other skin rashes
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Fever, hair loss, and mouth sores
  • Fingers turning white or blue in the cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)

Diagnosis

Lupus is diagnosed using a combination of clinical findings and laboratory tests, including antinuclear antibody (ANA) and other autoantibody tests, blood counts, and kidney and urine studies. We evaluate the whole picture to confirm the diagnosis and assess which organs may be involved.

Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates

Treatment is tailored to disease severity and the organs involved. It may include antimalarial medications such as hydroxychloroquine, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive or biologic therapies, and preventive measures such as sun protection. Regular monitoring helps keep the disease under control.
