Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures. It often has no symptoms until a bone breaks, which is why screening, prevention, and treatment are so important — especially as we age.
Overview
Bone is living tissue that is constantly being renewed. With osteoporosis, the body loses bone faster than it can replace it, leaving bones porous and fragile. Fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist are the most common and can seriously affect quality of life.
Osteoporosis is more common after menopause and with increasing age, but it is both preventable and treatable. Identifying risk early allows us to protect your bones before a fracture occurs.
Common Symptoms
- Often no symptoms until a fracture occurs
- Loss of height over time
- A stooped posture
- Back pain caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
- Bones that break more easily than expected
Diagnosis
Osteoporosis is diagnosed with a bone density scan (DEXA) along with a review of your fracture risk, medical history, and sometimes blood tests to look for contributing causes.
