Ankylosing Spondylitis

Expert diagnosis and treatment in Camp Hill, PA

Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and the joints where the spine meets the pelvis. It causes chronic back pain and stiffness, and early treatment can help preserve mobility and posture.

Overview

Ankylosing spondylitis often begins in early adulthood with gradual onset of low back and buttock pain that improves with activity and worsens with rest. Over time, inflammation can lead to stiffness and, in some cases, fusion of spinal bones.

It can also affect other joints and areas such as the hips, shoulders, eyes, and the points where tendons attach to bone. Staying active and following a treatment plan are key to maintaining flexibility.

Common Symptoms

  • Chronic low back and buttock pain, often worse at night or in the early morning
  • Stiffness that improves with movement and exercise
  • Reduced flexibility of the spine over time
  • Pain or swelling in the hips, shoulders, or other joints
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis) causing redness and pain in some patients

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on your symptoms, physical examination, imaging such as X-rays or MRI of the spine and pelvis, and blood tests that may include the HLA-B27 marker and inflammatory markers.

Treatment at B N Rheumatology Associates

Treatment focuses on controlling inflammation and preserving function with anti-inflammatory medications, biologic or targeted therapies when needed, and a consistent program of exercise and physical therapy to maintain posture and mobility.
